The Constitutional Court bans the Monday session of the Generalitat, which presumably will assemble regardless.

In response to a challenge from a Catalonian Socialist Party, rather than Rajoy et al.

        Indeed, I found that interesting.

They only 16 seats in the 135 seat assembly.

The nationalists are calling on "the people" to protect the Generalitat on Monday.

Inca, if you are still in BCN, you would be wise to avoid that area on Monday.

I was too young to really appreciate the hell of Yugoslavia’s implosion. What fun to be getting a second chance.

There's a huge group of people in the middle here - Catalans and Spaniards who feel there should be a referendum but who don't want the break up of Spain and who are also appalled by the state violence on Sunday - who currently have no voice in this while the secessionists in Barcelona and the fascists in Madrid shout at each other and attempt to co-opt them to their side of theblack and white debate

Of course we could easily wind up the Spanish by giving Gibraltar to the Catalans!

Two years of hard brexit and Gibraltar will be begging for the Spanish to come in. There is literally no reason for that enclave to exist without being a dodgy operator attached to the Single Market. Malta is probably giving the glad eye to the gambling firms/online marketing scamsters/Bitcoin disrupters right now. Cant see being a naval base and hilltop monkey tourist joint paying the bills anymore.

Podemos seem to be offering themselves as intermediaries, but it still seems that any proposal acceptable to one side won't appeal to the other, and vice-versa.

When we talk about a middle ground wanting a referendum, we mean an in/out referendum, or something else, maybe stronger devolution?

Malta is in the Commonwealth. It'll be following us out of the failing EU, mark my words.

In/out, but agreed constitutionally - at present, that would require Spaniards to vote on the issue, but doubtless a regional plebiscite could be sanctioned at a political pinch.

So are the pro-independence majority going to rock up to the Generalitat on Monday and take a beating?

                              Too early to say

I expect conversations on that question to dominate the next 72+ hours

I would say it's the tactically wisest move, meself like.

My inclination as well, but I'm not there, and yet still very afraid that they'll do more than beatings this time.

If the EU still hold firm on considering this an internal matter if things escalate to live fire etc outside the Parliament, I guess it’ll be a lot easier to understand how even Blum’s Govt in France could sit on its hands while Spain was on fire. Understandable the Brits being such cunts from the get go of course. We seem to have done our best again this time around.

What's Obama doing at the moment? Or Hillary, for that matter?

HRC is still on her book tour.

Last I saw the Obamas were celebrating their 25th anniversary

Hillary should head to Spain, just so headline writers can say "seeks to add a new chapter".

Interestingly, Switzerland already appears to be acting as an interlocuteur:

As if it wasn't already clear, Spaniards and Catalans are sharply divided:

The Castellanos like a bit of police violence, huh.

As has been pointed out, they'd do well to learn from Irish history. Had the Irish Parliamentary Party been granted Home Rule in the late 19th century then it is very likely that Ireland would still be in the UK. As it was, the UK government acted like Rajoy.
