Barry Brown's "Please Officer" with the version. The version definitely deviates from the standard aesthetic of a version, with a focus on drum breaks rather than heavy bass and echo.

Alexander Henry's Studio One track, "Please Be True" part of a mix and then two other mixes of covers, versions, or tracks on the same rhythm:

I have not seen him perform live. He was part of a reggae festival that happened in Chicago this summer but I didn't go since it was brutally hot at that time and an outdoor festival wasn't going to be good.

A three-part video (which I think are extras to a DVD) about sound systems in England. Some great stories in this:

ok, this is a long shot and a bizarre one at that but there seems to be a good deal of knowledge about reggae on here:

Back in the early eighties I was at a residential college and one of the helpers was really into reggae dub. He had a 12" vinyl disc on which there were some lyrics which went something like "sex shop is not for the 'handicapped".

Well, I've tried finding out who it was by, but with no luck. If anyone here has any clue please let me know!

                            Thanks.

@RL: I'll ask about those lyrics on a reggae forum, but those are odd lyrics for a true reggae act. I'd assume you heard something by a punk/post-punk group that was using reggae influences (something like Subhumans spin-off Culture Shock).

Here's a short clip featuring Jack Ruby's soundsystem. Very different vibe than the English soundsystem clips I posted above: slower tunes and a different type of dancing + different type of social space.

The 1st 2 UB40 albums are both great. No matter how many Century radio playings of Red, Red Wine you have to suffer, that will remain true.

I've just booked tickets to see Dennis Bovell doing a multi-media history (talk, film and live performance) of British reggae at Gateshead Sage. Dec 5th

I think the first 2-3 UB40 records were good. Maybe the last one I enjoyed was UB44. I can't remember where that fell in their catalogue.

Please report back about the Dennis Bovell session. I'll be curious to hear about it. Pressure Sounds has been reissuing a lot of his stuff, although I haven't picked up any of the CDs yet. They're on a very long "to buy" list.

Not quite reggae but I've been listening to a Trojan reissue of The Paragons' On The Beach With... album over the last week. It clocks in with a positively Floyd-esque 43 bonus tracks in addition to the original release's streamlined 10. Most of it is lovely, confirming rocksteady's position as ska's underrated younger sibling.

Sorry! Only you bumping the thread brought this request to my attention...

It was very enjoyable, but a lot less together than the description 'multi-media history' might suggest!

He had interviewed lots of figures in british and Jamaican reggae (ska, lovers' rock etc) and other pop culture types/fans (eg Suggs) and their brief video chat intro'd the trio on stage (Bovell on bass, John Kpiaye on guitar and keyboards, drummer...I forget. And some onstage dancers) playing a version of the particular song they chose. Some were a bit rough, but there were real gems- not surprisingly Matumbi and LKJ stuff they'd worked on was a lot tighter. Suggs chose Sonny's Lettah.

It overran massively because Bovell was having a great time and couldn't shut up, but the audience refused to leave without an encore, after which the bod from the venue came out and said this was a trial run for a hopefully much bigger tour next year bringing together various Reggae legends to play the same kind of history tour through the evolution of the genre(s).

I'll believe that when I see it!
