I'd be happy with either team winning, as long as the final has scoring and some brilliant play.

            We are all Spaniards now.

Now to topic A: will David Villa be fit to play?

The way they played when he went off, I don't think it matters.

I've got both teams in the office sweepstake, although I was hoping for a Turkey-Russia final.

So, may the best team win. But fuck Aragones.

"Spanish" Tony? It was "Swiss" Tony on the Fast Show, wasn't it? Or am I missing some other glaringly obvious cultural reference?

I think a Spanish Tony ran drugs for Keith Richard in the 60s and/or 70s, though that's not what I had in mind.

These two haven't played each other as often as one would have expected in major competitions have they? Off the top of my head I can only remember the match in that weird three-team group stage of the 1982 WC.

That said, Exeter prevailed against the forces of evil this season for a long overdue and utterly deserved good season so maybe Spain can do it...

I see that AB's list describes West Germany matches as German. Is this standard?

Yeah, it's the same team. In Germany they didn't even call the team 'West Germany'.

I for one will be happy to be ruled by our cheap-football-charging, terraced-stadium-building supporter-owning German overloads.

Which reminds me, I must get out there to watch a match sometime.

I like the upside down exclamation and question marks. They lend an air of overexcitement or utter confusion.

                                                THE FINAL: Germany v Spain

In 1974, that wanker Aragones was a member of the Atletico Madrid team who kicked and hacked and spat and punched Celtic out of the European Cup semi-finals (no fewer than four of them were sent off at Celtic Park).

The final was at Hampden Park against Bayern Munich and, after 114 goalless minutes, Aragones scored with a free-kick. Five more minutes ticked by. The repulsive hatchet-men of Atletico were about to be champions of Europe.

Then the great Georg Schwarzenbeck, who I will buy a beer if I ever meet him, sent a 40-yard daisy-cutter skidding along the grass and beyond the despairing reach of Pepe Reina's dad. The referee blew the final whistle a couple of moments afterwards.

There was a replay a few days later, and Atletico lost 4-0.

It would be nice if Aragones could once again be kicked savagely hard in the balls by Fate on Sunday.
