Neil Young's not really my cup of tea, but the world would be poorer without him. I like his angularity: his oblique, troubled angle to the world. I think his stuff has aged much better than that of yer Crosby, yer Stills and yer Nash, for example. Not to mention Lynyrd fucking Skynyrd.

Shame he's seemingly a Royalist, but that's neither here nor there artistically.

On the artist/audience alchemy thing. Many musicians love the live performance, but a whole lot find it absolute torture, or boring, and are happier making music in a studio.

Kate Bush being an example. I could give loads more but that would mentioning people I know. I've had to hold someone's hand through excruciating stage fright and it's not pleasant, I suffer from it myself which is why I don't perform. It's also a key reason so many end up with addiction problems - intoxication masking acute shyness and sensitivity. In other cases, it's just hassle they don't need - they're not "needy" in the sense of needing approval and adulation.

Artists are forced to perform to make any money on merch and flogging records, if they don't find a way round that by making money on syncs, soundtracks etc.

Many are driven to create, but not to perform.
