Alright. In college, I was working at a book signing outside of the bookstore, at the UCLA School of Film. A writer from Variety was there talking about independent film, a rather small event, so it was just me. There were a few people milling around in the lobby outside of the theater, but no one was buying any of the books. Then in walks Faye Dunaway--I didn't recognize her at first. She had on big sunglasses, was dressed pretty shlubby, and had a really sad looking salad in a big tupperware container with her that she started eating in the lobby. She seemed really anxious and came up to flip through the book--that's when I recognized her. She asked me about the author, if he was there already, stuff like that. She asked to buy a copy, which was $20. She thanked me and walked off.

Then, all of a sudden, one of the women that was waiting around in the lobby came up to me and said "do you know who that was? That was Faye Dunaway. YOU DO NOT CHARGE FAYE DUNAWAY FOR A BOOK." She then asked how much the book cost, and pulled out a twenty and handed to me, asking for Faye Dunaway's $20 back. I have no idea why she couldn't have just given her the $20 she had, but whatever.

She took Faye's $20, ran up to her and introduced herself and said "I'm sorry you had to pay for that..." and started kissing her ass royally. It was so sad to see.

Why is it that cougars are suddenly a big part of culture? (Well, by a "big part" I mean newspaper fluff stories that try to convince us all that their subject is part of a trend, when it seems that they are the ones pushing rather than covering such a trend). I mean, there was "Stacy's Mom" earlier and American Pie giving us "MILF," but there was really no identifiable lifestyle to go along with those things.

I also think it's unfair to Puma Concolor (known variously as cougars, mountain lions, pumas, panthers and painters) to be associated with the women usually called "cougars" - lots of plastic surgery, fake blond hair, hanging around in sketchy bars drinking cosmopolitans and hitting on vacuous male model types.

There's nothing about the breeding cycle of the noble but misunderstood North American mountain lion that would suggest that their females are especially interested in younger males. Indeed, from what I've read, they usually reach sexual maturity around age 2 and over the next few years, they have a few episodes of brief, unsatisfying sex with itinerant males and a couple of litters of cubs of which they are extremely protective. The males don't stick around to raise the cubs.
