If it wasn't for the production design (which is fantastic) 'Sky Captain And The World Of Tomorrow' would surely be a contender.
I so wanted that film to be good ...but it's diabolical, realistically-speaking.

I am also baffled by the hatred for Ferris Bueller's Day Off. It's not a classic of world cinema, certainly, but worst movie ever?
The worst film I've ever paid money to see in a movie theater was Trixie, an incomprehensible, tedious mess made by people who thought they were much more clever than they actually were. I would have walked out and demanded my money back if I hadn't been on a double date.

Too many bad films to narrow to one, but watched this documentary about this crap film. Dunno if I'd call it the worst film of all time, but it was very shitty.

I caught, and perversely watched Transformers 2; Revenge of the Fallen. I even paid money to see it at the cinema. I have managed however so far, to avoid watching the 3rd installment. I hear it's even worse, which does make me curious. Course, Bay isn't finished with the franchise just yet, so I suspect Transformers 4 will be even worse.
A less obvious film that I watched this time last year and found to be utterly dreadful and dull as anything was Archipelago. Dragged to it by my parents after Peter Bradshaw gave it a 4 or 5 star review in the Guardian, it was the most boring, excruciatingly painful 90/120 minutes of cinema i've seen. Upper middle class family go to Scilly Isles, whinge, take long pauses before whinging once more, utterly detestable characters and a complete non-story. A few people left our screening no doubt bored out of their mind, someone else in the row in front farted so loudly that my father and I got the giggles and I wanted the family to die horrifically so badly by the end of it.
According to one comment under the Guardian review, one person left a screening in disgust that before reaching the exit, they turned around and flicked the 'v' sign at the screen. Magnificent reaction.
Oh, and Ferris Bueller is ace, you fools.

I dunno. I think it's possible that our grandchildren will look at John Hughes movies to catch middle America of the 80s in the same way some of us look at Frank Capra films to see the 30s, and Douglas Sirk the 50s. Not because they are "real" exactly, but they catch the aspirations and sensibilities of their time and place well.

And the Vacation "Quest for Fun" rant still makes me laugh till I cry every time I see it.
Hughes definitely had dodgy politics, and the racist caricature Long Duk Dong in Sixteen Candles is unforgivable, but he could be very funny on occasion.

Uncle Buck gets criminally overlooked in favour of 16 Candles and Breakfast Club. Candy has some classic lines in that film, including the rant where he calls the principal a 'dried-out, brain-dead skag' and then ends with "Good day to you, madam."
Also: "Art Linkletter was right: kids say the god-damndest things."

"I'd like to report a missing boy. He's about 18. Wearing yellow pants, a red shirt and a plaid cardigan."
(Pause)
"Hmm? No, he's not retarded!"

I agree, AdC, that Hughes captured the eighties very well. It's just that since the eighties in the U.S. were generally a pretty reactionary time, the "warts" in his movies are rather ugly.
