Sorry dude, no really uncool & heavy mellow-harshing intended; Martin Denny, Arthur Lyman et. al. are perfectly fine. Just thought that by-their-nature vocal-less genres seemed sort of cheating in the context of the question.

        great tune

if you are interested in that down tempo 'beat' music, you could do worse than William orbit - Water From a Vineleaf.

Sun Tunnels by Texas Instruments - couldn't find a youtube link - very underrated band.

Bored, great pick w/ Instro, but I'll raise you w/ Transylvania, Ides of March, and Genghis Khan - great Iron Maiden tracks to either liven up the evening or end it.

Yer man Bowies Berlin period throws a few into the mix.

On the Jazz front we just chuck a few Dexter Gordon cds into the multichanger (when it fuckin worked that is). Oh and Coltranes "My Favourite Things" of course.

Theres a dancey saxxy "Big" John Patton instrumetal that I downloaded and stuck on a partymix cd yers ago that EVERYONE wanted to know the title of and Ive now lost it. I think it was recommended by someone on here? An ideas?

                          Further thoughts:

Link Wray: Rumble (a contender for the coolest record ever made by a white man)

Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton: Steppin' Out

If the dinner party is for people you really dislike you could always try these - particularly the live versions:

                          Cream: Toad

                          Led Zeppelin: Moby Dick

Daley Thompson aided by Lucozade and Iron Maiden's Phantom of the Opera!

Had not seen that one. Not an instrumental, but mostly doodling on guitar, bass and drums.

Seconded for Cal (and Bored): 'Go For It' is a fantastic tune, although dinner party wise, perhaps a little too much?

Just stick on an Air CD, and you will be fine (and if its the latest, your guests will not be talking... they will be thinking, 'what the fuck is this magnificence?')

NOT Madness 'Return of the Los (t) Palmas 7' which has a word in it. (But also not good for parties, unless they involve lots of squeaky sex).

Focus is probably a good choice, as everyone will be tapping their feet or something, even as they are talking. IF they are talking.

                                          Good luck.

If we're having jazz (the OP says he avoided bands who normally do instrumental stuff), 'Birdland' is out because it's got some very faint vocals in it (albeit too faint to make out exactly what they're saying).

There are certainly far worse bands to consider for such a mix than Weather Report, though. And if you want to liven the evening up a bit later on, you can add Jaco Pastorius' 'Soul Intro / The Chicken'.
