    Futbol Espanol 2008-09

Definitely Newcastle, MG. At least in terms of fanbase and history; not as much in terms of money though.

Football should be banned as a hazard. We finally managed to stay up the hard way. I couldn't make it to the game as I live away and tickets were gone within hours (people queued for 17 hours for a ticket). It was one of those can't miss games. I was trying to follow the game on TV, but I get angina when I follow a game throgh TV or radio, especially one as vital as this.

All in all, it was a succesful season. For one of the only two teams in the division with no internationals (along with Numancia) having the joint-bottom budget (also along with Numancia), no top-class experience except for two players and not a single signing for ten years we did better than it could be reasonably expected. I would sign for another season like this one, nail-biting finale and all.

numancia have an average home crowd of 8403. it's as if blackpool were in the premiership. How can a club that tiny make it into the top flight?

Oviedo go up after a penalty shootout. Wahey!

        Betis go down. Wahey!

Sabadell lose 0-1 against Real Union in the playoff semifinal first leg, including missing a penalty. Boo!

Sorry about Sabadell. They must be one of the largest away supports in the category, and they're a classic club. They wouldn't be out of place in the Segunda.

lodz, is now a good time to mention your prediction of Sabadell being the second biggest in barcelona next season?

Well, thank God for that. Oviedo played pretty poorly yesterday and I feared the worst when it went to penalties, but in the end we made it!

We'd have stayed up if it hadn't been for Barca geting all scared ahead of the Champions League final. And for what eh? They'd have walked it anyway. And then Real not bothering to turn up.

                    Harrumph, harrumph, harrumph.

If you look closely at Casillas in Osasuna's first goal you can see him on the mobile booking his holidays.

Sabadell bite the dust in the playoff semifinal, following up the 0-1 loss in the home leg v Real Union with a 1-1 draw in the return match in Irun last night. Ah well.

Cristiano derrota a los leones (RMad beat Athletic)

Cristiano aplastado en el Coliseo (CR7 given a good kicking away at Getafe)

Que hara Cristiano en la Catedral? (CR7 prepares for said visit to Bilbao)

This is sad stuff, that (otf favourite) Pablo Alfaro's been bundled out of the back door of the Sanchez Pizjuan, being released from his consultative role. With Javi Navarro having given up the ghost in the last few weeks because of his persistent knee problems, it's the end of an era in Nervion.

Turco-Spanish news, some may need to be confirmed though.

Nihat has been put on the transfer list by Vilarreal and is wanted by Besiktas, is it correct he has been transfer listed?

Leo Franco has left Atletico to go to Galatasaray, is he any good?

Marco Aurelio will only leave Real Betis for 10M euros, Fenerbahçe want him back, is there any interest in Spain for him?

Mehmet Topal is wanted by Sevilla, if they can't get Zokora from Spurs, and Valencia, I thought he was on his way to Everton but that move seems to have cooled.

Frank Rijkaard is planning on taking his Barça players who couldn't make it in England to Galatasaray, Deco and Dos Santos.

CE Sabadell are not resting on their laurels this summer so far, bringing out this funky new version of the club anthem. Now if that doesn't fill you with anti-Terrassa zeal, what will?

And, speaking of Terrassa, sad news from last night's Spain match, where Telecinco had installed a big screen so that fans (in Xavi's home town) could watch the game. But Catalan nationalists decided to interrupt it all, and chuck firebombs at the screen, causing the whole thing to be abandoned. At least no one was hurt.

Promotion from Segunda B seems to get more confusing every year. Or maybe it'e just me. Cadiz are Segunda B champions after beating Cartegnea 3-2 on aggregate. Even though they were both promoted to La Segunda before they played each other.
The season finishes tonight in Spain, Tenerife will be Segunda champions if they win.

                                                Real Unión promoted this evening.

Jaén are currently playing Villarreal for the last spot. I was at the first leg last Sunday, 0-0 in front of 12,000 including some 1,500 away fans at el Madrigal. Villarreal were much better but Jaén parked the bus a bit and will be favourites tonight.
