    Evra v Suárez

I dunno, Steveeeeeee. What about Verón looks un-latino, exactly? I can't see it.

Although even if he was, the general point still stands; no-one here considers Verón black, and the same would apply to virtually anyone eligible for an Argentine passport. This man, on the other hand, Teo Gutiérrez, a Colombian who plays for Racing (and might be heading to your neck of the woods before long actually, Steve), is what passes for a negro in Argentina, to the extent that he claims to have suffered racist abuse from some opponents...

I guess it's the goatee and the Jordan-esque bald-head. When I search for his pictures, I find more that convince me he must have African blood in him (well, we all do at the end of the day) than not - he looks as black a man as Rio Ferdinand or Wes Brown, imo.

It might just be the knowledge that he's Argentine (and my knowledge of Argentina) that lead me to not see any such thing. My sole complaint with John Foot's book Calcio was that at one point, talking about the racism, specifically towards black players, of Lazio's ultra, the author says (I'm paraphrasing, but this isn't far off), 'oddly, they had no problem when Lazio signed Seba Verón - a black man.'

'Why would they?' I remember thinking. 'He's not black...'

Liverpool striker Luis Suarez has been charged with using abusive and/or insulting words and/or behaviour towards Manchester United's Patrice Evra during the game between the clubs at Anfield on October 15, the Football Association have confirmed.

            Sepp'll fix it.

There is no racism, there is maybe one of the players towards the other, he has a word or a gesture which is not the correct one, but also the one who is affected by that, he should say it's a game, we are in a game.

At the end of the game, we shake hands, this can happen, because we have worked so hard against racism and discrimination.

They've taken their bloody time over it, the FA.
I sincerely hope it's not true and innocent until proven etc. but if it is, there is a book that needs to be thrown Luis' way.

I wish Blatter had said that while he was in South Africa last year. There would have been some really conflicted ANC functionaries wringing their hands.

                          It's that serious.

Apparently Rio Ferdinand's tweets tend to be worth following.

                              Blatter's tweeted back at him:

@rioferdy5 The ‘black man’ as you call him has a name: Tokyo Sexwale. He has done tremendous work against racism and apartheid in Africa...

Gordon Taylor has joined the long list of those calling for him to resign. I'd missed the Blatter quote saying homosexuals should refrain from having sex in Qatar.

Look we all know Blatter is living in an alternate universe to us all but no matter how much the British press screams he is not resigning.

Nevermind that for now, how about the name of the guy he was shaking hands with in the picture, Tokyo Sexwale???!!!! Sounds like a great name for a Japanese porno actor!

The calculus is always the same.

Blatter will only go if the sponsors turn off the flow of money and/or the Swiss government seriously challenges FIFA's charitable status.

This latest episode will actually make some of the sponsors (like Coca-Cola) more uncomfortable than the corruption claims, but absent more, I don't see it as being enough to dislodge him.

The process that the FIFA PR people went through to select the photo with Sexwale must have been interesting:

A: We need a photo of Sepp with a black guy right away!

B: Lemme take a look in the file. Mugabe? Houphouët-Boigny? Bongo? Obiang? Hayatou? Warner? Shit, this is much harder than I thought it would be.

It's also worth noting that the reason why Ferdinand didn't know Sexwale's name was because FIFA didn't include it in their caption.

Suarez does have previous for insulting black people:

                                              -

                                              -

...although I was pretty insulted by it too (as many of you will recall).

There is no handball. There is maybe a player's hands touching the ball but it is only a game; at the end of the game you shake hands.
