Oh look: "Life For Rent", Dido. None. None more middle class.

                    Sorry Courtney.
I've always assumed that was the point: that he was satirising bourgeois boho wannabes, and being a bit self-deprecating at the same time. Is that crediting C T-T with too much wit?

                    Good call either way.

No, you're right, I think CTT meant it like that, and I didn't want to hold up that song as a "look they think they're so boho, but they're just middle class" as he is sending those sort of people up. You've put it better than I did.

I don't know him well - he's working with The Wolfmen (which means there are minor grumbles) and my best girlfriend is a fan, so I've heard their stuff beyond that one track and generally think him a good and clever fellow. And I like that song (So Bohemian Like You, to correct the title).

Anyway, Cat's in the Cradle by Harry Chapin.

                        Carey by Joni Mitchell.

I should think of more English ones but I'm a bit cream crackered.

Under the Ivy by Kate Bush.

It sort of makes me wish I'd grown up middle class, although we did have roses, and I have ivy (lots of) and white roses of my own now. Ivy seems quite middle class to me, and it sounds like her garden was big enough to hide in, and that she had parties as a child. Ivy envy.

Otherwise, there's Under Ice (she had proper ice skates and skated on a river, not Richmond ice rink!).

Or are they working class songs? Let the debate commence.

Simon & Garfunkel - 'Richard Corey'
Roxy Music 'In Every Dream Home A Heartache'
                                            Throwing Muses 'Vicky's Box'

Um, actually. I'm not sure about the last two. The Roxy tune could be about a working-class bloke who's doing very well financially, and the Muses tune appears to be about borgeouis domesticity, but we're all borgeouis now aren't we. Oh, hang on. I've just thought of another one.

McCarthy - We Are All Borgeouis Now

I'm not sure about 'Play to Win' either. That tune, and every other tune on 'Penthouse and Pavement', i've always taken to be about the working-class wanting to enter formerly establishment financial institutions, like um, banks and that.

                                                Sorry, no.

They got bland later on, but Red Box is full of anger about the working class being stiffed, e.g. Money's Too Tight to Mention. And Mick Hucknall was a w.c. lad made good.
