    Murdoch scum

    C'mon guys.

James Murdoch authorised the out of court settlement of lawsuits against the NOTW and NI brought by victims of the hacking campaign.

That's actually prudent action in his role as a director. Any rational NI shareholder would much rather they pay Siena Miller a hundred thousand quid than go through extended litigation that would cost many times that, likely end in a verdict for even more, and (most importantly) provide ample evidence and incentive for a host of copy cat lawsuits.

dglh, you are of course right, but the last time I paid attention (which was admittedly a while ago) merger arb just wasn't that sophisticated.

GY, I agree with your conclusion on the likelihood of the merger going through, but would not be surprised if the government engineered a delay of some sort, and also think that there would be a real chance of serious conditions being imposed if it was referred to the Competition Commission.

Paul MacLullan is going on Radio 4 "World At One"in a minute saying that his reporting, that was informed by information bought from police, led directly to the suicide of Denholm Elliot's daughter.

They are also reporting that the Sheridan trial is being looked at.

Was there evidence Desmond's lot had done anything like this at the time of the takeover of Channel 5? The main argument against him at the time seemed to be that he was a "porn baron".

Re Kelvin McCunt, he has just been signed by The Mail, and has yet to produce his first column. They already have Littlejohn who's referred to phonehacking once as being unimportant, and mostly concentrated on stuff like "The Bin Police". Looks like they're going to have another very quiet "Dave Straight" (© Wingco) on their hands.

Not that any of their readers will notice.

The Mail had to pay damages over its reporting of the suicide:

Weirdly, one of the first things I thought of when this all broke earlier in the week was that it was terrible timing for Private Eye.

Still, at least it gives them a full two weeks to really go to town on it.

That's an interesting piece from Whittam Smith, but I'd like to know how many successful prosecutions have been grounded in the "any neglect" clause of Section 79 and what the facts were.

It's all about the news remit, and there's a huge difference between Sky News 24 hour rolling news channel, and Five's news output, half of their new remit being taken up by that horrendus celebrity gossip show hosted by Ian Wright, Jayne Middlemiss and that Brummie woman no-one knows the name of.

I guess it depends how it affects their sales, if at all. If it doesn't, we might see them withdraw advertising from all of the print media. After all, in an economy like this, companies look for as many excuses as they can to cut costs.

From Hunt's perspective on media plurality, sure. From Ofcom's perspective it isn't, though.
