    TOTP on BBC4

Tonight's offering was interesting mainly for videos. Sublime (Madness) to ridiculous (Iron maiden, Tight Fit), to the downright bizarre (PHD). Guessing they showed so many as they'd blown that weeks studio budget on Adam Ant arsing around with what appeared to be Hills Angels.

Having heard Tight Fit's Fantasy Island twice over the last week or so, I've realised with a sense of creeping dread that I am falling for its 4th division Abbaesque charms.

Yes, Senhora stev9e and I were singing along to Fantasy Island last night. I'll be honest, I always thought it was an Abba song. The video was interesting, it had that sort of 80s hardcore European porn feel about it whilst being perfectly wholesome and innocent.

The Ph.D video was crazy, do you think they chose the Amazonian model because she looked so absurd stood next to Jim Diamond, or because they believed she was a looker?

The PHD video was quite creepy, I thought, aiming aiming for Madness territory but missing the mark.

Adam Ant seemed a bit out of sorts, as well he might have done given the weird collision of Benny Hill and Kafka he was trapped inside.

It's not unfamiliar from clips shows, but ABC's - well essentially Martin Fry's - performance must be one of the highlights of TOTP's entire history.

Peter Powell proof reading the chart rundown as it was being broadcast was a testament to the professionalism of the whole enterprise. Zoo seemed to be holding some kind of sit-in protest - perhaps the rudimentary break dancers weren't union members.

Amusing to see a clown in the Madness video given all the fuss there's been this week.

I was more surprised at the 'knife scene' in the Phd video!

Time hasn't really been kind to the drugged/poisoned drink scene in the Phd effort either. Only mitigated slightly by the sachet obviously being one of sugar that had been pinched from some nearby caff.

The bomb scene was a bit odd too.

I've just been reading the Tight Fit website (so you don't have to etc). See they released a new album last year and had a remixed version of The Lion Sleeps Tonight reach #36 in the US Dance charts.

It'd be great if they acknowledged the passing years and reformed as Elasticated Waistband.

Found them on Twitter too, they're at @steve_tightfit. They're proudly announcing being part of "80's Live" at Preston Guildhall next April, alongside Paul Young, Sonia, Katrina (seemingly without the Waves), Hazell Dean, Brother Beyond's Nathan Moore and Kelly Wilde (no, me neither).

I remembered that Tight Fit song just a bit too well for my own liking - it's like the last 34 years never happened.

I also recently saw Sonia walking down the street as I was out and about shopping - somehow suspect I won't be seeing the others you mention in a mundane everyday setting in these parts anytime soon.

One has always stuck in mind, after a performance by Meatloaf that prompted "did you see the sheep grazing on the lower slopes?"

And now, this morning, with Google's legs akimbo, I find this....

What the hell happened last weekend? John Peel introduced a show on Thursday night that had Musical Youth just joining the hit parade, and ended with him saying next week's announcer would be Kid Jensen. Then on Friday night we get Peel again with Musical Youth having their third week at number one and ABC, Kid Creole and Dexy's all on the way down, so I've missed three songs that I was particularly looking forward to.

It was presented by Radio 1 DJ's rather than Kid, as this included Yewtree presenters it didn't get shown. Then the following week was a Savile show, so that got skipped too.

Miles behind on the repeats myself, the last one I saw contained some borderline offensive satire of John McEnroe and had Irene Cara going to live forever.

That's one to drive the slightly OCD mad, isn't it? Fans of Kevin Rowland's band will gently point out that it's Dexys, not Dexy's. Yet, the apostrophied form is not incorrect, since the name on the first three or so singles (including "Geno") were credited to Dexy's Midnight Runners. Which I presume was a record company error rather than a case of Rowland changing the written form of his band's name as easily as their image.

Of course, if one refers to the iteration of the band in the context of 1982, then Gangster Octopu's is incorrect in applying an apostrophe to the Midnight Runners' first name.

I thought I was making progress but I'm still only up to 12 August, and the quantum leaps described now mean I've got to get to 28 October to catch up. I made up a bit of ground by skipping an episode almost entirely made up of repeats.

God the BBC flogged Fame and that single to death - messages from the cast and from Irene Cara herself, and filming her in New York and cutting it with footage to make a video. I still remember what a relief it was when Come on Eileen took over as the song of the summer.

I can't remember what Toto Coelo's follow up single was, but I do remember watching them mime to it from what seemed like miles away, when Saturday Superstore visited Carlisle Castle for its outside broadcast bits.
