    Kieslowski - three colours trilogy

    Soooo,
after meaning to watch these for forever, I finally got the boxset and saw Blue and White last week. Both have been puzzling me ever since, but particularly Blue. I had initially planned to watch them all close together, but I’ve since put off watching Red because I don’t think I’m anywhere near digesting Blue, nevermind White too. I think I need to return to Blue before anything else.

I think they've dated really, really badly, myself. But then maybe it's me.

        I agree with Lyra.

But I do remember the Dekalog being really great.

You say that as though it's a bad thing!

I love the little period touches in them that put them firmly in the pre-internet 90's.

'Blue' is a bit long but it's got a great performance by Juliette Binche in it. 'Red' has got a brilliant central idea, an old man surrounded by the trappings of communication but unable to communicate himself. 'White' is one of the funniest films i've ever seen, cracks me up.

The Dekalog though, fuck me, grimmest films i've ever seen. Very good though, I do like it, and admire the incredible ambition of the underlying idea, but it's total suicide note stuff isn't it?

One about a lad skating on thin ice. One about a woman completely alone thinking about killing herself on Christmas Eve. One about a lad who kills a taxi driver.

Polish telly in the late 80's must have been ace though, seriously.

Blue I couldn't warm to at all; too much style over substance in my opinion.

Red I enjoyed a lot more. I may also have been seriously distracted by Irene Jacob, who was deeply beautiful (maybe still is).

White I still haven't got round to seeing.

The three films get an enormous amount of notoriety out of being packaged as a colored trilogy, it's a powerful and very unique bit of branding.

I saw the Red one in 2001 and wasn't moved by it at all. It just seemed like a generic, box-ticking French arthouse film.

                    What are the boxes though?

                    Set in France?
Got French people acting in it all talking in French?
Road-signs, public notices and adverts on open display throughout the film all written in French?
About something to do with France?

It was absolutely fantastic. A true work of art.
