Sadly the legendary player and reigning men's singles champion Paul Foster has withdrawn due to the death of his father.

The women's world champion has already been decided, and it's 22 year old Katherine Rednall from Stowmarket. This is a successful defence of last year's title and her third in all, having set the record for youngest champion with her first win four years ago.

It has sucked me in again over the last few days. BBC2 have opened their coverage of the final with a typically ludicrous Morricone soundtracked montage.

I was slightly concerned that Darren Burnett was going to drop dead during the semi final. If anyone fancies a life of crime, Arbroath looks like the place to take it up.

It's that time again. Paul Foster and Alex Marshall have teamed up to win yet another World Indoor pairs title together, with the televised stage of the singles starting today. Marshall has now won a total of 23 gold medals in World outdoor and indoor championships and Commonwealth Games (a de facto World Championship as pretty much every bowls playing nation except the USA goes to it). I reckon 23 world titles (18 even not counting the commonwealths) might make him Britain's most decorated sportsman.

Robert Paxton (last year's singles runner up) won the mixed pairs with Ellen Falkner. I'm made up as Paxton is from my home town, Crediton!

Starts again on BBC2 on Monday. The men's pairs is down to the final and will once again feature Alex Marshall and Paul Foster, the Bryan bothers of pairs bowls. The men's singles is in preliminary stages at the moment, all the big names look like they're going to be in the last 16 so far.

The pairs final went to a sudden death deciding end, and Marshall and Foster lost it, to Greg Harlow and Nick Brett. All four are in the last sixteen of the singles (indeed all four are previous world singles champions, Alex Marshall six times over) which begins in earnest this afternoon. Holder Stewart Anderson and Greg Harlow are the top two seeds, and Robert Paxton from my home town in Devon is seeded eighth.

David Bryant finally in the ditch. Possibly was the last living original great of a sport.

2021's world indoor championship is back on BBC2 from Monday. It's a world championship with an asterisk this year as it's only being contested by UK based players because of the travel ban, but should still be fun.

In a curious precursor to the event, world number 2 Nick Brett (the chap in longeared's clip above) broke his arm playing golf so had to withdraw. To allow Greg Harlow to defend his pairs title that he won with Brett last year they allowed him to pair up with Ellen Falkner and called it "Open pairs", and Harlow and Falkner have reached the final. There is still a "mixed pairs" event separately taking place. A few other late withdrawals from the men's singles have similarly been filled by putting the top women in the draw and calling it "Open singles" (Falkner included, and 3-time women's champion Katherine Redknall) so it will be interesting to see how they fare.

It's on and they start with the aforementioned open pairs final! The pairs are walking out to Song 2 by Blur and Atomic by Blondie !!

                              LET'S! PLAY! BOWLS!!

One of the semi-finals cancelled with a walkover for their expected opponent, after both quarter-finalists tested positive for covid-19 ahead of their match. A precursor of what we might see at the tennis?

2022's up to the semi-finals this afternoon. One of the players robbed of a semi-final chance last year by a covid test, Wayne Willgress, beat the 2021 champion Mark Dawes and will meet five-time champion Paul Foster in the first semi. Then, Les 'Razor' Gillett will meet six-time champion, Alex Marshall, in the second semi-final. Foster and Marshall are pairs partners and have won multiple world and commonwealth championships playing together, so for them to meet in the final would be something.

Good grief, this year's Open singles has been carnage. There's not a player aged over 45 left in it at the semi-final stage, which I'm fairly confident is unprecedented in the modern (post-1745) era. My main man Robert "Bobby" Paxton from my home town is possibly now the favourite, and the oldest player left in at 44.

A belated bowls update, but one that warmed my heart a little. In last month's World Outdoor championships, Canada's Ryan Bester won the gold in singles, having lost the final in the previous two (2012 and 2016, 2020 having been cancelled) as well losing the final in the Commonwealth Games (which in bowls is pretty much a de facto world championship) in both 2014 and 2018. I always have a soft spot for perennial runners-up finally winning.

It's on the telly again, for those who like something gentle on in the background on BBC2 as you work from home. Stewart Anderson and Darren Burnett have won the Open pairs title for a third time, and as we speak Nick Brett (one of the few male competitors with an apparently healthy BMI) is going for gold in the Mixed pairs final with partner Julie Forrest, up against holders Anderson (the same) and Ceri-Ann Glen. Brett clearly enjoys pairs bowls, he's been singles champion once but this could be his sixth pairs title with various partners over the years.

The Open singles starts later, leading up to a final on Sunday afternoon, and the Ladies' Singles final is on Thursday. Ceri-Ann Glen's still in that, as well as this final, so could be Ray de Galles's first Welsh World Champion of 2024 for his list.

Open singles quarter-finals today. Seven of the eight quarter-finalists are former champions, including the holder, Jamie Walker, up against the next bright young thing, Harry Goodwin from Devon. There's the possibility of an all-Devonian semi-final in the top half as Robert Paxton is in QF2, while in the bottom half of the draw, the chance is still on for a semi-final between the Federer and Nadal of Scottish bowls, Alex Marshall (6 times world indoor champion) and Paul Foster (5 times a winner).
