Shit, genuine lump in the throat, I've only heard through this thread.
I met her a lot in the 90's, my ex knew her. I was always a drunk fan boy when I met her, which I guess she liked because Broadcast were perennially one of those criminally underrated bands and she never told me to fuck off and leave her alone, like many have told me when I've had a few. It fucking sucks that she's passed away, but it really fucking sucks that it has to happen when the future for the band finally looked so promising.
This happened to the young wife of a college friend of mine: dose of the flu, pneumonia, dead. It's utterly shocking. It's a thing you associate with Jane Austen novels, not 21st century Western reality. Horrible, horrible news.
Not sure how relevant this is, but my brother's best mate is a consultant in charge of intensive care at a hospital here in the northwest. He lost a previously fit, sporty and healthy 22 year old female patient to pneumonia just last week.
It appears that swine flu sometimes leads to a form of pneumonia where the normal exchange of gasses just doesn't happen. He was saying it's totally heartbreaking, and as a physician totally baffling. You can ventilate these patients till the cow's come home, but if the normal exchange of oxygen and CO2 doesn't happen you are totally powerless to save them.
