Hochei Sport Club Csikszereda (or HSC Miercurea Ciuc, depending on the audience), have just done something quite miraculous and won a group in the Continental Cup. Faced with the champions of Hungary, Slovenia and Kazakhstan, in Maribor, they managed to qualify from the group. They play DAB Docler (Hungary) regularly, and there was always a chance that the Slovenian team would be at a similar level, but the expectation of everyone was that Karaganda of Kazakhstan would be clearly a cut above the other 3. However on Saturday HSC won 4-3, and thus qualified with a day to spare.
They now head to Italy in late November to face the champs of Italy, Denmark and Ukraine, which I assume will be won by the Ukrainian team.
My support this year is given added interest because our friends' and neighbours' oldest son has this year been promoted to the first team and has played in pretty much every game, including in the first line in a couple. He's only 17 and a great kid. HSC are clearly top of the MOL league (joint Hungary/Romania) at the moment, and Zsombi is doing fantastically. his parents vacillate between intense pride and extreme worry about the amount of school he is missing.
