Just a related point regarding the shuffle function: does anybody else get fed up with it after a little while and have a craving to listen to a full album?
To me, using the shuffle most of the time is like experiencing an endless succession of sugar rushes as opposed to a satisfying meal. Great in moderate doses, but not the majority of the time.
Public Nuisance - "America"
Stella - "L'Idole des jaunes"
Sam Spence - "The Net"
Pesnyary - (track name in biellorussian won't post here)
Jaime & Nair - "Nevoa Seca"
Tony Allen & the Afro Messengers - No Discrimination
Susana Baca - Negra Presuntuosa (Afro-Peruvian singer)
Johnny Cash - Folsom Prison Blues
The Beatles - I'm Looking Through You (Anthology version)
Memory Tapes - Pink Stones

I have a different problem with it. Though I was only briefly a DJ, I was properly bitten by the bug, it seems, and I still like my transitions between songs to be thought through. It's amusing when you get NWA followed by Pavarotti or something, but I don't really enjoy those juxtapositions. And Genius is not yet good enough--either that or I resent not being in charge.
So I want an MP3 player that allows me to improvise playlists in real time, and crossfade between songs. I'm sure there'd be a niche for a product like that.
Not bothered about not listening to albums right through; I rarely did, to be honest.
Yeah, I don't like Genius. It picks songs that are too similar, I think. Something similar that I like more is on last.fm, when you can select a "radio station" based on an artist, and get similar artists--you can also pick up to three artists and have a station based on them, so you get more diversity.
One thing about this shuffle exercise that I like is that I find songs that I downloaded at one point and meant to listen to, but never did. Like that last one on my most recent list--Memory Tapes. I have no idea who they are, when I downloaded that, etc. And I found out that I don't really care for that song all that much, so I'll probably move it off my iPod.

Surely it can't belong before one (a *small* MP3 player) comes out with software pre-installed that allows you to crossfade and mix and which (optionally) intelligently syncs bpm and even the key/pitch of a track in realtime?
(Someone is going to tell me this already exists now, of course!)
Such a device could make everyone into DJs. On the downside(?) it could potentially ruin the careers of established DJs.

Depends on the situation. Shuffle is great for things like going round the supermarket and commuting.

I like shuffle for cycling / walking to work and play full albums when at home.
It's only 10/15 minutes to work, so if I listen to full albums it can mean I'm listening to the same one for about 3 days
