Any system that seeds Switzerland is flawed.

And your alternative seed would be?

I'm not sure how "alternative" this is meant to be. The official FIFA ranking is so heavily skewed towards performances in the World Cup Finals and qualifiers, this list is bound to correlate pretty closely to that one. The only reason Slovakia's position seems out of kilter is that their WC performance (of reaching the last 16) was based solely on one result, beating Italy (who hadn't lost competitively in 2 years before that).

If you mean 'alternative' in the sense of wacky/ left-field/ avant-garde, not at all. It merely ignores the irrelevant (friendlies), the aged (games before August 2008) and the convoluted (weighting results according to the strength of the opposition or other arbitrary criteria).

Er, that's my point. It should do but it doesn't, particularly in the middle levels. FIFA have Bosnia (who made the play-offs) ranked below FOURTEEN teams that didn't.

Either you agree that finals performances outrank qualifiers (in which case, given that half the finalists only play three games, one win will be pretty significant), or you countback to qualification, in which case the Slovaks were still the eighth-best team in Europe. In practice they're being marked down for losing a rugby score at home to Wales, and other mediocre results in Euro 2008.

It's starting to look like the historical table in Portugal or The Netherlands.

The gap between the "big three" and the rest is becoming a chasm.

I doubt that the "big three theory" will stand up in Poland/Ukraine, it's more about these three teams having had good tournaments. France will be back in the top 5 under Blanc, and Italy somewhere in the top 10.

A system that is more of a moving average raher than just the order of finish in the last major tournament.

In competitive football, it's effectively the same thing- the tournament as a whole lasts two years. As opposed to St Andrew's or Wimbledon, which even with qualifying lasts a month.

The official start for major football tournaments actually is when Scotland is eliminated, or when the first complaint about the new ball is lodged (whichever comes last.)

I don't see how Portugal can be above England. They both secured 5 points in the group and lost in the last 16 to top 3 sides, but England won their qualifier group whilst Portugal scraped into the play-offs.

Satchmo- Portugal pip England because I've made goal-difference in the finals the countback, rather than points in qualifying. I'll admit it's a bit arbitrary.

It does seem a bit odd, all the media fuss when the debate is really whether England are the fourth or fifth best team in Europe?

But as was noted above, "The gap between the "big three" and the rest is becoming a chasm."

4th is the best of a bad bunch: worse than all 5 South American sides, worse or no better than Japan, USA, South Korea, Ghana...
