Am I the only one that hates Fernando Duarte?

God, I hate this guy. It's his voice. I wish the Guardian podcast would get somebody else to talk about South American football.

He doesn't bother me. And if we're talking annoying voices, I'd rather listen to him than Guillem Balague.

If I knew who that was, I would offer my opinion.

You can try the Times' "The Game" podcast.

Personally, I find one of the episodic Scots on Football Weekly much more problematic, as I can barely make out what he is saying.

That would be Kevin McCarra, I imagine. Glaswegian accent, Celtic fan (I think). If you think he's incoherent on that, you should try reading his match reports. I'm sure it's a tricky thing to write a good one, especially to a tight deadline, but he specialises in the cut-and-pasted garbled nonsense effect, where pre-formulated sentences are slapped in the middle of the match report almost at random.

And McCarra would not win many fans on here, based on his comments about Franchise FC a month back or so.

Hmm...Duarte is also a Liverpool fan. Whenever he talks about them, he uses "we."

I can't see the problem with Duarte's voice. he just sounds Brazilian to me.

The thing that bugs me about that show is James Richardson's complete and utter inability to facilitate a discussion.

As a whole the cast members are a little overly-amused by themselves. Often justifiably, I guess, but still the pods get quite flabby at times (50 minutes? Woof!). Still, Glendenning is worth listening to for sheer bitchiness if nothing else.

Yeah, of what I've heard I quite like Duarte. His enthusiasm for Zico and Fenerbache a while ago was rather endearing I thought.

And I agree with ad hoc about Richardson. He has some good puns and is clearly a good presenter but he often misses good opportunities to get an interesting discussion going. He's too focused on moving on to the next item. Always in a hurry.

I like Barry Glendenning. Kevin McCarra's got a creepy laugh. And as Inca said he's a disgusting apologist for Franchise FC.

Isn't Glendenning a mate of our own (seemingly missing) Jonathan "The Stroke" Mexted?

(Where is he by the way - does he have a new user name?)

I don't listen to podcasts, but I do enjoy Guillem Balague whenever I watch Spanish football on Sky. He's miles better than anyone else they've ever had on there. Especially the fucking footballers. That prat who plays for Arsenal was on once, and he was a complete waste of space.

Glendenning can be amusing, but as a whole I find them erring on the side of smug and lazy too often and would include him in that. The Times podcast was much better under Danny Kelly last year, with Marcotti and Balague supporting rather than hosting.

I very much enjoy the Up All Night World Football podcast with Tim Vickery, from Saturday night's BBC Radio 5 show (note: not the shorter Alan Green ones).

It's Duarte's enthusiasm, when his voice goes up and down, and all his words slur together, is when he gets to me. Maybe I just haven't heard someone with that heavy a Brazilian accent speaking English before, and it's normal.

I do think the guys in the Guardian podcast can get to self-satisfied and smug sometimes, but I remember the reporters in the Guardian Newspod where far worse--coming up with some pun, preceding it with a bunch of "um, um, well, you know..." and then being the ones most entertained with themselves. The guys in the football podcast have never gotten that bad.

I like Barry the best, even if I suspect that he's the one that keeps "soccerball" alive when talking about American soccer.

I think MLS should stump up the money for a journo junket of English hacks to come to games in Toronto and Chicago and DC to see what the game's really like away from the disaster of NYRB and the freak show of LAG. I think it would do the league's image a world of good.

I listen to it for Sid Lowe's Spanish section, it's the best bit in the whole podcast and the main inspiration behind starting my/our own Portuguese podcast.

The growing problem with Guardian Football Weekly is concentration on coming up with awful puns or matey banter rather than actually giving informative content for people like me, living outside the UK, who use podcasts as a sort of media lifeline. It's great having a jokey fall guy like Barry Glendenning as a side kick but when you've got him, Duarte and Sean Ingle all in the studio at the same time it can become a bit unlistenable. The treatment of the German correspondent last week was atrocious. This weeks podcast had Barney Ronay on it, who is fantastic but he hardly got a word in because of Duarte, Glendenning and James Richardson.

I really like James Richardson but feel he sells himself too short with all his joking around because he really knows his stuff. However, it would've been interesting to hear the show with Bob Mills hosting it, pity he dropped out at the last moment.

With regards to this inca, Brazilian Portuguese, specifically when spoken by males, uses quite rhythmical and tonally fluctuating pronunciation, so his way of speaking English is a fairly honest if sometimes slightly irritating amalgamation of Brazilian intonation matched with strong American pronunciation he's got from originally learning English and some strange bits of cockney he's picked up living in London.

It winds me up a bit the way he insists his name should be pronounced "Duar-tay". In Brazil this the case because Brazilian's over emphasise the last "e" in any word, in fact many words have e's at the end of them that don't even exist in the written word. However, in Portugal this is not the case and Duarte would be be pronounced exactly as you would expect it to be,

Thanks for the explanation, but "Duar-tay" is exactly how I would expect Duarte to be pronounced.

He sings during most Premiership matches, especially Tezez scores. Its great.

The thing is, there's no accent on the "e", if it was written "Duarté" then you could "Duar-tay" away, but there isn't. That's not to say it shouldn't be pronounced "Duar-tay", it's just that people aren't making a mistake if they say "Du-art".

In fact, a Brazilian would normally pronounce it doo-ahr-chee (stress on the middle syllable, as steveee says).
