    Post-move updates

As a follow up, there are a few things being done.

I'm pricing up an minor upgrade to the hosting to stop the forum banging off the resource limits under the heaviest load. It looks like we can handle around 650 concurrent users at any one time, but have been hitting 750 and getting those "resource limit reached" errors. This is an optional extra, so what might happen is that I put it in place for times of heavy load, such as tournaments. We'll see. I'm also keeping an eye on the bandwidth consumption - basically since the move we have used 10% of the available bandwidth, but I suspect a chunk of that was the various database upgrades. I also have a couple of options for lowering both bandwidth and resource, but having a think. No rush, especially as I am hitting a very busy time with Real Work for the next two weeks.

The OTF domain name is now transferred over to Zen, so WSC are no longer responsible for it. Renewal is due in September.

Also as a final goodbye, WSC admin accounts have been downgraded to normal user accounts.

The vBulletin licence is also being transferred over to me, there is apparently a small cost for this and I[m waiting for the invoice. This is fine, because WSC have waived any cost to reimburse the original purchase to them.

I know that people have made incredibly generous offers to cover costs, and there will be a method to contribute in the near future but right now everything is fine and I'm keeping track of costs. Once I have an idea of the extra server resource, I'll post the numbers but if you are really curious, due to the generosity of WSC and Latitude (the old hosts) for giving us licences and support for free, so far moving OTF has cost me a tenner.

Thanks again for all of your efforts, Snake

The transition has been incredibly painless so far, almost entirely down to you and the generosity of others

If we have a whip round of those 750 users and they all give a little over a penny, we might be able to reimburse you...

As ever, as and when a scheme takes shape for us all to contribute, I'll be as ready as I might ever be to fork out.

I think your billing rate may be a little low...

              This for me too.

I want to say thank you for all the work you have done and are continuing to do Snake. Really, I can't emphasise that enough given how indelicate my question is.

What happens to the site if you get hit by a bus or similar?

Well, that would be an interesting day...

I do need to set up a break glass admin account and then securely store the details where someone can get to them. Or maybe also make a current user an admin. (I need a couple of moderators anyway to validate new user signups). I dunno. Need a think.

Meanwhile, I'll avoid crossing roads for a while.

Bit extreme, but at least everything will be intact. I'm more concerned that Snake will have a full on flounce one day and smash the place up before he leaves.

Seriously though, Snake, what you have done so far is far beyond what anyone could reasonably expect. In the real world we would be paying you for your services with a regular wage.

Or, at least, with the promise of a couple of pints at the next real-world get-together and a hearty "Good man, Plissken!" and a manly slap on the back or two.

As everyone else has said, it's extraordinarily fine work you've done here Snake to make this as seamless and painless as it's been. Bravo indeed.

I'd happily contribute a pint or two, but might want to spread them around, lest "hit by a bus" gets replaced by "liver disease" as OTF's primary source of failure.

I think that we're all hugely grateful to Snake for all of the unpaid hard work he puts in, or at least we certainly should be. He certainly won't have to put his hand in his pocket at any OTFathon he attends, should we ever manage to organise another one IRL.

At least five OTFers can vouch for me being a real person.

Depending on how many people constitute a thon, I have attended OTF meetups in the UK, Spain, Romania, the USA, and Australia (and heard of others in Argentina, South Africa, Canada, and I presume many others I've forgotten about)

Oh. And Ireland of course where I met TAB

You were and are one of the few current regulars who attended - Duncan Gardner and Lobachevsky are the others, I think.

Ex-OTFers and rare sightings these days - Villain, Purves Grundy, Liq, Disco Sea Shanties and JtS.

DCI Harry Batt and Big Dave's Gusset sent their apologies for absence.

2006. I still did some socialising then, I think. And apologising, obvs.

I remember seeing you lounging on the grass outside the Hand In Hand with a couple of acquaintances a few years beforehand, probably before I joined OTF actually and certainly before I put your real life and cyber identities together.
