If we forget all the perils and long journeys, once you arrive to the great Kublai Khan, you’d have to follow certain rules. As you enter his court room, you would have to get down on your knees and bow, you know in that manner where your forehead reaches the floor.
That once done, you would have the possibility to become quite close to Kublai, his son, his people, learn a great deal about that culture, and in general be very privileged, treated as a highly important western guest.
If you refuse to bow, you can’t even ride with Marco Polo.
Same with lots of other well know leaders throughout history, you would either have to abide to certain rules, or you’d not get to meet them.
Bow, sit lower than them at all times, address them in a certain way, not be allowed to wear certain items, must wear certain items, etc
