Race and homophobia. I expect a better starting point would have been class and homophobia- perhaps the racial differences would have been much less pronounced if adjustments were made for class. Many oppressed people like to find someone else to look down on, egged on no doubt by churches and "community leaders".
Instead, it's down to racist gay men, apparently who haven't reached out enough. Would he talk about the need to reach out to poor white racists? I doubt it very much. And the evidence for this gay racism doesn't seem very strong- a couple of quotes from gay men, and the absence of prominent black gays.
