Not out early for good behaviour

Ronnie Biggs in the news again.

As far as I can tell he had a 30 year sentence, and so would have served 15 years if his behaviour had been good.

So far he spent a year in jail before escaping and then another 8 years since returning. So 9 years into a 30 year sentence and presumably we can consider that his behaviour hasn't been good.

    So, what am I missing?

It's a waste of money keeping him inside and another Home Secretary (or Justice Secretary) makes his mind up based on what the media might think?

Other than that, there are cases more worthy of worrying about

But I think Straw might be right. Otherwise there is no penalty for escaping jail.

I don't think many people would protest a release on compassionate grounds at this stage, though.
