The Vile Jacqui Smith grows viler

    MI5 empiricism-if we don't see it it didn't happen

This is where Stephen Fry is right: there are better reasons to despise our rulers than dodgy expense claims.

I was going to lament what's happened to the Labour party, but actually, what's the party's record on torture? The suppression of Mau Mau, which was perhaps the worst episode of British torture since the War, was all during the Thirteen Years of Tory Misrule, so Labour can claim they're in the clear on that, and the same applies to the nastiest period of colonial oppression in Cyprus. But the worst British Army torture in Northern Ireland began during Wilson's premiership, and the Malayan Emergency arose under Attlee.

British governments of all colours have a habit of, at best, winking at this stuff.
