    Employment Query

Does OTF have any specialists in employment law? I've a quick query for anyone with more than my own cursory knowledge.

If someone is employed on a fixed term contract with a specified end date, and the contract does not get extended beyond that date, is the employee expected / legally required to inform the organisation or even to write a letter of resignation?

I know of case recently where someone ended their fixed term contract without explicitly informing the employer, though it was clearly known that the contract was coming to an end. A few weeks later he recieved a letter from the employer saying that they had recieved his communication to inform them he was leaving and that they had accepted his letter of resignation. He never wrote such a communication. Doesn't this have implications for claiming Job-Seekers' allowance / Income Support?

Sounds to me like the company sent out a standard letter, they probably send the same one to everyone who leaves, which was why it acknowledged the letter of resignation. It's a standard protocol innit, to write a note to say you're leaving, just good manners really.
If he wants to claim JSA, then he'd have to tell the JC he's out of work because the contract ended, otherwise I don't think you can claim JSA if you resign form ajob.

You are eligible for JSA if a contract ends, and even if you resign you will become eligible after a long waiting period, as long as you are actively seeking work. You might get IS in the meantime depending on your circumstances.
