    Ein Tritt in die Zähne

There's been a bit of a hooh-hah in Berlin in recent months, culminating in a referendum today on getting denominational religious education recognised in schools as an alternative to ethics, which is currently compulsory for all. It's far too complicated to sum up here, but suffice to say the churches and the right-wing parties have put up a massive and aggressive campaign in favour of RE.

This included a huge billboard campaign featuring the likes of Günther Jauch, the host of "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire" and Hertha captain Arne Friedrich. The "Pro-Reli" posters outnumbered the "Pro-Ethik" ones by at least twenty to one. God alone (hehe) knows where they got the money from.

Anyway, the vote was today and the results are in. And they were surprising to say the least. Not only did the referendum fail to get enough votes for the proposal to be accepted, but the majority of those who could even be bothered to turn out voted against it.

I am so proud to be a Berliner tonight.

Günther Jauch lives in Brandenburg, doesn't he? Do his kids attend a Berlin-based school?

He lives in Potsdam. I don't know where he sends his kids but you can bet your life it's not a state school in Berlin, so he's got a bloody cheek getting involved.

Because if anyone is a good frontman for religious ethics, it's a gameshow host who encourages people to get filthy rich overnight. What the hell?

He's actually does quite good job on that show, but he makes no secret that he's a conservative. He had no business getting involved in this one, though.

I'm more disappointed in Arne Friedrich, to be honest.

The fact that Arne Friedrich got involved is disappointing, but unsurprising. He's never made any secret of his liking for Bible Circles although, up until recently, he hadn't sounded off about it in the same way that Wynton Rufer and Jorghino used to.

Two thousand years ago the proudest boast was CIVIS ROMANUS SUM.

Today, in the world of freedom, the proudest boast is „Ich bin ein Berliner!“

All free men, wherever they may live, are citizens of Berlin, and, therefore, as a free man, I take pride in the words, „Ich bin ein Berliner!“
