Has the time of the fountains passed?

There aren’t many built nowadays, are there?

The big one in Gothenburg is top of the main street

    It's Poseidon, of Greek mythology

Fountains aren’t something you seek out as you visit cities, are they?
They’re always the spot sought out after big EC and WC wins, with people throwing themselves into it.

Rome's got a fountain or two that are "pretty sought out" by tourists, I think.

And as for Sheffield, well ... lets just say no-one bothers to pay to pee in the station building anymore ...

Rome and Brussels (Manneken Pis) are the only places that come to mind as far as places with fountains as the most important tourist attractions. Aix-en-Provence in France is another city that is famous for its fountains.

Antwerp has a bloody weird one of a man throwing a hand, from which the name of the city is supposedly taken (ant = hand, wearpen = to throw).

This is the hero Brabo - for whom Brabant is named - shortly after chopping off the hand of the giant Antigoon (really), who allegedly made a nuisance of himself extracting a toll from people wanting to cross the Schelde.

Water shoots out of the stump like gushing blood.

Well, I certainly sought this one out:

          Barcelona.

This is the fountain in Nuneaton on the ring road, it is called the dandelion.
It never operates now as the cost of maintenance has most likely become too prohibitve for the council to continue it's upkeep. A real waste.

This attracts a lot of tourists, though I don't see the appeal:

                Also, the Bellagio:

I think Chicago's Buckingham Fountain is pretty neat.

The Jet d'eau is quite famous. And impressive to look at, too.

Good one, the tallest of them all. The Alps and Mont Blanc provide a great background.

GY, where is that Neptune fountain with the dolphin?

                        Montjuic, Barcelona.

Tourist trap, but absolutely fantastic (keep your wallet safe). If you go at a certain time of evening/season, they play superb music to match the fountains. Touristy? Yes. Spectacular? Absofuckinglutely. Do it.

i walked that way to see an espanynol match last season, not the best route. saturday evening families out for stroll and getting in the way of a load of drunk espanyol fans trying to get up the mountain. the building works didn't help either

a few exchanges between both parties as well

Most towns in the UK have a pool of green slime where a fountain once operated. Perhaps they were a symbol of progress in the days when pumped water supplies to homes were rare.
Nowadays, giant LED screens showing scenes from the borough or selected events like 'Last night of the proms' seems to have taken their place.

That Nuneaton fountain look magnificent. The new fountain court in the Courtauld is good
                                    too

There's a Fountains trust which offers public support to fountains and a link to some of the best in the UK
