    Your political compass

Don't know if anyone's come across this before.
    http://www.politicalcompass.org/

Clearly some here won't need to use this to know where they stand but this was interesting to me as I'm not particularly knowledgeable about politics and don't feel like I have any real natural ideological affinity to either the left or right. I'm quite surprised to be so far to the left .

    My results if you're interested

We've done this before pt. 1

We've done this before pt. 2

We've done this before pt. 3

Always interesting to do it again to see if there are any changes though. There is a number of new posters too.

Very few people do, apart from Marxists or Fascists or other deluded utopian nutters. I wouldn't let it worry you.

I think that puts me down in 'go about your business' territory. But not as far down as 'go about everyone else's business'.

I think the problem with this thing is that, when you get down to brass tacks, it's bollocks. Don't you reckon?

People are, generally, much further to the left than they think they are.

I think we discuss this everytime, but bollocks in what way? Bollocks as in "the test is shit" or "not like we get a candidate in our quadrant anyway".

And as always, the astrology question... seriously, what the fuck?

People on the left, generally, like to believe this.

Anyway, I tried it again, and I got:

                      Economic Left/Right: -9.12
                      Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -9.44

Not sure how that compares with last time.

They've added these since I last visited.

They are bollocks WE but can be reasonably informative as a crude measurement.

It's only on 2 axes. There needs to be [at least]a third one to deal with stateism vs anarchism.

WOM - I don' think that's true, as it goes. But I suppose I would think that. As it goes, there is way too much pessimism /cynicism on the left.

Tough call, I guess. Maybe give this test to a few noted right wingers and see how they 'do'. Unless, of course, it really is bollocks.

But pessimism / cynicism on the left? I'd have said the opposite. To me, right wingers are cynical and bitter. Left wingism is about optimism and potential. But then, you really are in the trenches compared to me, so your view is much better. Um...for want of a less mangled metaphor.

"Too much" could mean "any at all" though. As it is, I think far too many, right now, for example, think "you can't fight in a recession" and are content to negotiate away jobs, pay and conditions.

Ah, okay. You're being that specific. I was thinking more broadly of the Left as dreaming of the way things could be, vs the Right dreaming of the way things were (you know...when people knew their place, and everyone spoke English and you knew who was who (wink wink)..."you know, good ____________ like you and me." Sorry...I can't help but see right wingers as angry antiques.

I agree with you about where the pessimism and cynicism should lie, which is why it annoys me even more when I see it on the left.

So, basically, I'm a cross between Mandela and Ghandi. Which is nice. I might put that on my CV.

My grasp of economics is weak: can someone explain in words of one syllable their thought process when asked whether it was more important to control inflation or reduce unemployment?
