The priests who deliver the homilies at the funerals of characters like these must find it tricky walking the fine line between sycophancy and outright absurdity.

Is that a line that they're unfamiliar with?

He said Philip Collopy’s death which took place on a weekend of huge sporting success demonstrated the “contrasts that are taking place about us”.
So! A good weekend for sports fans, not such a good one for fans of organised crime and responsible gun handling!

I'd say Fr O'Malley was struggling to keep a straight face as he delivered his homily.

Think Pink Panther scene when Dreyfus gives eulogy about Clouseau.

A colleague of mine knew him and related some stories that I would not be happy to repeat on a public forum.

Suffice it to say that that the town concerned is no less safe with the demise of this citizen.

Collopy? You can't libel the dead you know.

Stick the stories up -- if they're just about Collopy then you can't be sued in any way.

Hopefully this won't result in a rash of Collopycat killings.

                          hahaha.

To be honest you could have stuck up the story even if he was alive. The limerick crime gangs aren't exactly considered to be the most intellectually sophisticated gangsters on god's earth. for example they apparently aren't able to launder money, instead keeping it in wheely bins.

An intellectually sophisticated Limerick gangster, yesterday.

This prick was jailed a couple of years ago for stealing Mr Collopy's black Audi and trashing it. I have no idea how he is still alive.

I love the Toyota pick-up draped in a Tricolour

I am sure you, like I, gather funeral details to celebrate our own lives. Welsh male voice choirs singing "Sunarise", that sort of thing.

Well, a Toyota Hilux pick-up draped in a Red Dragon is now added to the list

"...including many of Philip Collopy’s brothers..."

How many did he have? That implies a small army.

It's not the fear of being sued, more that they were unpleasant.

Let getting a 14 year old boy to dig his own grave before burying him in it, that sort of thing. His apparent 'crime' was that his mother used to go out with someone from a rival family.

She did tell me about some of the inter-family rivalries but I couldn't keep up to be honest. I'm starting to see why she left there.

Perhaps he should have sported a bullet-proof hat and not just the vest.
