There was a really disturbing Japanese-made robot that was shown on "Best Week Ever" last week. I guess it was designed to teach autistic children about facial expressions (or something like that), and it's frightened face went along with an "eee!" noise it made. Really creepy seeing the facial expression change from neutral. What's that theoretical concept about the point which something artificial designed to look human becomes creepy? This went way past it.

And, going along with this thread, I sarcastically said to my wife "funny how these male robotics inventors always seem to create female robots. Guess it must be a coincidence."

I always thought I would be healthily intrigued by the continuing advances in technology. I find in this case my reaction is fear and the impulse to beat it with a stick until it stops working. Why couldn't they make it look like a robot for christ's sake?

I'm not having a go, but I am genuinely puzzled as to why you think she looks like a porn star. She looks like a normal Japanese girl to me (apart from being a robot n'all). Porn movies might employ young, pliant looking girls but that doesn't mean young, pliant looking girls all look "porny", does it?

It does strike me as a bit weird that people are getting all testy over it, yeah.
It's essentially a remote control car with a rubber face. They could make one look totally human, but it would still be essentially a can opener.

I didn't find that robot at all unnerving. Surely we've all seen similarly (un)realistic virtual reality characters on computer screens; it doesn't look much different to me. And it's not as if the robot's about to run after you and bite your neck or something.

I can't see how it looks like a porn person either, just the kind of face computer programmes would likely create as a composite of "friendly" or "attractive" features.

Perhaps the robot people like making "female" robots because they encounter less of the fear instilled in people by the murderous male robots we're used to from sci-fi.

Bloody Hell, what's weird about it? I think the above photos demonstrate admirably.

I do recongnise it as a remarkable piece of technology, especially the bipedal walk, but the sort of botched-dwarf appearance puts the hairs up on the back of my neck. It's a very fine robot but a really bloody weird human being.

And yes, I do find dolls creepy too. Especially the porcelain ones.
