    Gerry Ryan

"Acting the maggot"? Acting the horrible fat slug would be more like it.

He is paid €558,000 a year for doing that godawful radio show and he still won't take a salary cut. What an unmerciful shitehawk he has proved himself to be, yet again.

Former RTÉ presenter Vincent Browne said it was the fault of RTÉ management that stars were paid so much. Speaking on his TV3 Nightly News with Vincent Browne programme, Browne -– who was an RTÉ radio presenter for 11 years until 2007 –- said that, if RTÉ management offered their stars €250,000, they would have nowhere else to go in the present economic climate.
This is absolutely bang on -- most of RTE's stars are either mediocre or crap at their jobs, and would have zero hope of getting an equivalently well-paid job in the British or American media.

The ones still at RTE are the culls that the overseas media didn't want anyway - like Kenny and the Seoige sisters, who are all made of concrete.

There are only two of them. It just feels like there are more.

(EDIT: oh, you meant Plank too, didn't you. Ah well.)

Meanwhile, Ryan Tubridy has bowed to public pressure and taken a 10% pay cut. His initial excuse was that his "legal situation" did not allow him to do it and that he would make a charitable donation instead, but that the "legal situation" has now changed. (This may have something to do with him splitting up with the wife a while back and it may have been the case that she wanted a certain percentage of his take-home pay in the divorce settlement. Or it may not.)

All of which leaves Ryan (Gerry, that is) as the odd man out among RTE's ten highest earners. There is actually a small chance that this thing could make him into a genuine hate-figure among the general public if he's not careful.

Ryan's latest TV show is a thing where members of the general public undergo makeover-type weight loss programmes and emerge blinking into the light as new men and women. He must have some serious balls to present a programme like that while weighing about 20 stone.

Still, I guess it's no worse than Ryantown, Gerry Ryan Tonight, Ryan Confidential, Secrets, The School Around The Corner, Gerry Ryan's Hitlist . . .

In fairness though, Gerry Ryan is the best of a bad bunch. He did the Late Late Show a few months ago and he made Kenny look like crap. He should still take the 10% cut though.

Is Larry Gogan still on the radio?

er, the other week, before the late late started, RTE carried the result of several complaints about a tommy tiernan sketch that laughed at travellers and physically handicapped people. Ryan was the host that night, and made no effort to rein in tiernan. He was if anything worse than kenny.

Larry gogan is still on the radio and appears every week on the seoige show with his "What year was it" quiz.

except €250,000 is a massive overstatement. fintan o'toole makes €90k at the irish times and does better work than any of these clowns. i'd love to know how pat kenny's salary spiralled to 850k a year. what did his agent threaten RTE management with in negotiations - sign the contract or he'll quit and make a million a year on the corporate lecture circuit? someone as nakedly ambitious and attention-craving as kenny would have presented the late late for free.

i guess the management wanted to pay the stars the maximum so they could justify their own inflated salaries - it's free money after all.

Ah, he's not. He's gross and disgusting. Before the wife left him, he routinely used to talk about the minute details of their sex life on the radio and loads of other unedifying stuff.

It's not for nothing that the Apres Match caricature of him has him frantically stuffing his face and slopping food all over his chin and neck like the obese diner in The Meaning Of Life -- and it's not just a reference to his waistline either.

Pat Kenny is merely a shite TV presenter with the interviewing skills of a fence post. Gerry Ryan is a sleazy creep with dodgy attitudes.

RTE were supposed to open an international satellite channel (something they avoided doing for years) this year (one of the few good things the Greens managed to do), but in the last few weeks they stated that it will be delayed indefinitely, due to the current economic climate.

You have all these GOD channels, shopping channels and, er, female conversation channels on SKY, yet RTE are claiming they can't afford to buy the bandwidth. All people want is a channel relaying things like the news, Fair City, the Late Late and bit of TG4, home grown stuff with no rights issues. It would cost nothing to run, but they won't do it. They're using it as an excuse to milk more TV license money.

Let Pat Kenny and Gerry Ryan walk, who cares. They'll find new blood.

                    Ryan caves in

He will now have to scrape by on a mere half a million quid a year.
