I used to avoid Subway like I would Starbucks or McDonald's, after an early tentative visit some years ago left me with a foot-long limp baguette filled mostly with lettuce and an occasional fleck of chicken tikka, and not much change out of £3.

Sometimes, though, people in life swing your opinions round, and because my kids love Subway sandwiches (I think it's because it's one of the places where they can order adults around, in terms of choosing what fillings they want, so in their mind it must make them feel like princesses in a castle) I was drawn to go back there. And you know what? They've really upped their game. The prices are a lot lower, and the food is pretty much - well, almost - worth what you're paying for. Even if, like me, you decide in the shop that chicken teriyaki, olives and gherkins sounds like a really good idea.
