    Carbon footprints

KgCO2 per 100 passenger kilometres (averages):

    Bus (diesel) 6
    Train 6
    Car (driver and passenger) 10.5
    Domestic flight 16
    Car (driver only) 21

Figures currently used by DEFFRA. If you take those figures at face value, we should discourage anyone driving alone from Manchester to London, and make them all fly or take the train instead (which, in filling the often part-empty planes and trains, would presumably only serve to drop the average KgCO2 per passenger further)?

However, on the flip side, there is no way a family of 4 should be allowed to take the train or bus (24 Kg per 100 km, between them) when they can drive for 21.

It's very confusing, this climate change stuff.

It's not going to be quite 21, as it'll take more petrol to transport 4 people and their luggage than 1 person with no luggage. And of course there are other considerations than carbon. But, yeah, there are some interesting quirks in transport. I saw some statistics from the States that showed buses as less efficient in practice than cars, because they have low ridership on average.
