    Pillock. Nerd.

Just been looking through a bag of old postcards I've acquired here and there over the years, and I thought I'd share a few of them with you.

They're mainly interesting in terms of what various people, at various times, thought it would be a good idea to put on a postcard/poster in order to get their message across.

I've got the Careless Talk Costs Lives poster at home. I think it's really well designed, as well as a historical artefact.

I like the way the forces boys are clearly chatting each other up, the rum coves, and completely ignoring the advances of the available blonde.

        Yeah, it's lovely.

The two Irish ones, by the way, were on sale at reception in the Belfast Marriott. Which struck me as kind of surprising, even though they were admirably equal opportunities about it.

And for some reason, I'm imagining the second one with the faces of the current Premiership managers.

          To Photoshop...

Yeah, that 'Keep Mum' one is lovely.

My gran had the Keep Mum one, the Dig for Victory one

                a gas mask one

and this one, which frightened the life out of me as a small child.

This, however, is the greatest poster ever -

I love WWII posters. If I had the money, my house would be full of 'em.

That car poster doesn't make sense at first, until you realise it's about wasting fuel. But it's still rather nuts.

I've never heard of a "pillock" before.

It was designed by Gerald Lacoste, who was a captain in the Royal Artillery.

In civilian life he was an architect: here is an example of his Art Deco work.

                                The man had talent.

That 'Keep Calm and Carry On' one sort of sums up the British stiff upper lip like nothing else, doesn't it? However, when Bush tried the similar "Go about your business. Go shopping." after 9/11, it went over like a fart in church.

Gordon Brown so needs to adopt that "keep calm and carry on" poster as his own. It should be his manifesto poster for 2009.

That house looks good, too - love the diagonal line at the front - presumably a staircase inside. I wonder if it's still standing.

What is the "dig for victory" one about? What were you supposed to be digging? Trenches, graves, vegetable plots, places to bury mines?

My reaction to the (aesthetically lovely) Keep Mum poster, of which I have a copy knocking about somewhere, has always been "show some social skills you miserable louts and don't talk across a woman as though she doesn't exist. Did your mothers teach you nothing, you mannerless oafs?"

I love the "ride with Hitler" poster, I found it a couple of weeks ago and was immediately enchanted.

My brother has this rather wonderful 30s advert at home:
