An incident I experienced today had me thinking about ganja's thread, and I had an extra question for the copyright bods on here ...

What happens with things like: the Eiffel Tower, the London bus, the British post box and old phone box, a train ticket, a simple zebra crossing? Someone was responsible for designing all of these, and institutions use them. Where does that leave someone who might want to exploit their design? Or are they deemed to be in the public domain and fair game?
