Abbot Kinney built Venice, yes even with canals, as an elegant seaside resort in Los Angeles, obviously modeled on Venice, Italy. It was so successful, someone copied the idea and created Naples in Long Beach.
For having lived here my whole life, I've never been to the boardwalk. I'd be too depressed to know that I live among most of the people there.
