    The problem with "silent majorities"

Is often that you'd like them to remain silent.

In the village I live in, the parish council has finally decided to raze a small copse of bushes and trees that laid between the village pub (at one end) and the shops and houses at the other end, after many complaints from people (not only women) that, after dark, walking through said copse felt quite threatening and dangerous, being unlit and all.

The universal response to this from the "blokes in the pub" has been, "well where the bloody hell am I going to be able to go for a piss on me way home now?"

Why don't they just put up some lighting instead of chopping it all down?
