I've been discussing this story with a colleague. We both have an interest in African politics (although I'm a bit off the pace). I just wondered if anyone knew a bit more, particuarly about Mo Ibrahim and his motivation - where did he make his money? Bent deals to supply stuff to African states? I know he was big in mobile phones...

"The Prize Committee assesses democratically elected former Executive Heads of State or Government from sub-Saharan African countries who have served their term in office within the limits set by their country`s constitution, and has left office within the last three years"
But really, that's a hell of a lot of money to give to someone. It's like "if you're good and play nice, and don't steal money, we'll reward you with MORE MONEY THAN YOU CAN EVER SPEND."
