    How do animals communicate?

Based on a comment on another thread I've started to wonder.

The cats who live next door never make a sound to each other or the humans they live with. Yet you see them decide to move back inside for whatever reason whilst not making a noise or make any eye contact with each other. They don't even look in the others direction.

Its not just cats, there must be some sort of communictaion between animals which just isn't registered.

Birds seem to be very vocal in advertising themselves / calling for mates, but they only peep you would hear out of cats or dogs is when the are in need or threatened.

    Any ideas?

My cat certainly lets me know when he wants feeding, the little sod. The "dawn chorus" in my house is him prowling all over the bed, sitting on my head and purring, then miaowing (mew-mewing" in Chinese, I'm told) until I get up.

You're right, though, he doesn't "talk" to other cats. They just seem to pass each other in the street, and look each other up and down, as if to say "nice threads." "Yeah, I know. Want some?" "No, mate, you're too hard for me". Like bald blokes in Bench T-shirts in a pub car park on a Friday night.

I'm certain cats use ear movements to communicate with each other most of the time.

But it is weird that when the squirrel is on the balcony outside, one of them will see it and 'silently call' the other one who will always come from the other end of the flat, even if it was asleep on the bed.

There must be some high-pitched chicanery going on.

We have one cat that chatters at us constantly but, it's true, not to other cats. Sound is for other species maybe? Dogs communicate with body language and smell, so I imagine cats do too. They have odd social habits anyway. What is that thing about where they gather in a large silent group then sit and stare at each other? I once walked past a church in Cricklewood and there must have been fifty cats, totally silent just, well, there. Not obviously doing anything, or preparing to do anything, just, like, being! It's spooky man...

The witches were inside the church, and the animals were in the cat park.

I never realised until last week, but squirrels like chatting. It was a revelation, I'd always considered them mute.

I never heard a squirrel make a sound up until one day waiting for a train in Hadfield when a young'un was skeeking. Weird noise, it took us a while to figure out it was it making it. A bunch of local kids seemed to find it disturbing...

Depends on the individual. Like AdC's cats. My cat talks continually, it's just chatter of the 'hi, just passing through' variety a lot of the time. He also does that chirrupy talking to other cats thing. Not to mention the whole range of screeches and all the body language like the ears and the fat tail and the question mark tail.

did I mention I love my cat?
