    Swimming pools? In England?

Someone in the office just sent around a link to this story.

Drunk horse falls into swimming pool.

Looking at the pictures, my first thought was "that's not a swimming pool...it's a pool of old oatmeal". Obviously not in use right now, but how many people have backyard pools over there? Doesn't seem like something with a very long season. Almost Canada-like, even.

Most big houses in Cornwall, Devon, Kent and Essex have pools in the back garden, that I've been to.

And they're invariably pathetic attempts at pretending the British weather is actually nice enough to "enjoy" such a thing. Fucking freezing, normally. I've swum in back garden pools in Essex and Cornwall.

Seriously, Google Earth Frinton-on-Sea, and a place called Sandbanks in Dorset. There's more pools than putting greens. The nutters.

This dovetails nicely into the thread on cider I've just been reading.
