The other day BBC Parliament had the 1964 Election on, and it featured an interview with George Brown. Apparently we're supposed to feel it was a shame he left the Labour Party, but not on this evidence.
Asked a quite reasonable question about a hung parliament, he blustered in a way that made Kenneth Clarke's "Trabant rant" look sensible.
GB: "I'm sick of Bob MacKenzie talking up the Liberals. He's talking rubbish. We're going to win an easy majority".
Robin Day: "Well, I might just bring Bob McKenzie in to respond to that-"
GB: "You invited me on here to be interviewed by you. I'm not speaking to him-"
RD: "Fair enough. But let me ask you-"
GB: "Don't interrupt/if you'll let me answer"
ad nauseam in Sir Geoffrey Norman mode.
Still, nice finale. MacKenzie apologised for having upset Brown. "Let's discuss it some time. Maybe over a drink!" Cue laughter.
Labour, btw, won a devastating majority of 3. And given the right wing cunts on its benches, like Woodrow Wyatt, that wasn't very good.
