Were you in Google in 2001?

Google's oldest index, from January 2001.

Really weird to search "9/11" and find nothing about the World Trade Center.

"Barack Obama" returned 711 results; "Sarah Palin" 0.

7 references - 2 letters to an old university email news sheet, 2 alumni bits at same uni, 1 Notes and Query comment in the Graun, 1 mention in the Fiver and 1 through my current job.

Were you in Google in 2001?

About a dozen references. Two to an old Oldham website I used to run, two to an online footie management game, a few on football message boards and someone who copied my CV but didn't change the name.

There are a couple of WISA references I found too, but again, the actual story referred to is gone.

Oh, hang on, I just found one of them. Me, banging on almost exactly eight years ago about something I still say at pretty much every regular meeting I go to:

TonTon suggested we avoid always having meetings on the same day of the week as this precludes attendance by those who have other regular commitments or interests.

Were you in Google in 2001?

I just manage to get on page one, with remarkably detailed directions where to find me-then- (bit alarming, since I'm also on 'Redwatch'!)

Reminded me how amused I was to be googled by colleagues at the time and find I share a name with the world's biggest Scalextric collector, a gay porn star (I have a phallic surname), a new Orleans jazzman, a poet...

Multiple references on the first page.

Which is what one gets when one has a highly unusual last name and relatively ancient academic publications.

Were you in Google in 2001?

I found a link to myself mixing it with some mathematicians and maths pedagogy specialists about whether the idea of a function as a subset of a Cartesian product should be taught to undergraduates. It was getting quite heated.

I have no memory of it at all, and even wondered for a while if it might be a different guy with the same name. It was only the fact that (a) this guy worked for the same institution and (b) this guy was obviously completely right, and was talking nothing but sweet wisdom throughout, that convinced me it was me. I find that kind of thing a bit scary.

Quite a lot - some otf stuff, some rec.arts.drwho usenet stuff and a load of acadmeic papers and stuff about a research project I did at Leeds University 8 years previously.

Fantastic! It has a link to players' early season appearances for Feltham FC, though the webpage no longer exists. At least I know from the headline figures that I scored 1 goal in 4 appearances.

Nowhere to be found, back then.

Nowadays, I'm beating my Antipodean oil tycoon namesake to the top three places simply by having DJed with Derek at BigSexyLand once.

None for me at all, unsurprisingly (at least on the first eight pages), but plenty for my name on account of it being very common. One is this very versatile football player who plays for a team in what I presume is the States with the quite magnificent name 'Bumrushers'.

Today, I'm the fourth link on the first page (my Flickr profile). One of my Pitch Invasion articles is on the second page, another to my NowPublic profile on page 6, a link to my old Voice Of Football columnist profile at the top of page 7, and that's all I've got in the first ten pages. I have to say I was expecting something from (at least) OTF and / or Soccernet to show up somewhere. Maybe if I check back again in another seven years...

I'm in there, best to add Watford after my name to locate the results at the top. Most of the articles have gone, match reports of games played for Watford internet fans footy team including one where I lost the ball with a clearance and by the time I got back the two opposing captains had finished a big argument by abandoning the match.

Having less than perfect credit is not a problem here at EW Subprime. We understand that not everyone has perfect credit, and sometimes bad things happen to good people.

Nah, not on there unless you know to look up my member name on the old ezboard.

Of course, I have an incredibly common first and last name combination. I am a commoner after all.

The change in result for "worst president ever" is certainly amusing/depressing.

Ha! the second hit on my name was an obituary for our Revs fanzine in the Providence Journal sports pages, which was above a paragraph on David Moyes, manager of PNE hoping that the Revs would knock Columbus out of the playoffs extra early so PNE could sign Brian McBride.
