Where’s the centre of a city?

In British Isles i always assumed it to be where the market traditionally met and road distances being intially marked up to aid traders travelling between markets.

Where’s the centre of a city?

Given that a "city" has to have a cathedral and a University
You know this isn't true, and has never been true, don't you? By this reckoning there were no cities in England until Oxford got its cathedral in the sixteenth century.
