Nobody should do their bollocksing poll, it just gives them clicks.

Me too. It means that I am a left-winger who subsequently tears himself apart by arguing with his immediate colleagues (power struggle time) and then with other parties who should more or less be on the same political wavelength give or take some minorish policy issues thus playing into the hand of the right wing. It also means I have a stupid ponytail but at least it means I never have to wear a tie again.

Penny is a Novara Media editor. It's not like Helen Lewis came out of nowhere with a good take.

            Good piece.

She was joined by Matteo Renzi and Tony Blair, all of whom agreed in a recent Guardian interview that controls on immigration were needed to fend off the advance of the far right.
It's not as if immigration is uncontrolled FFS. I'm now officially pissed off that the Guardian panders to these fascist-enablers, really am.

Maybe we should just stop enriching the 1% by destroying job security and housing affordability for the working classes in Europe, and while we're at it also stop bombing the shit out of the third world.

Oh wait, I'm starting to sound like a populist.

We should bomb the third world more, that’ll stop them coming over here. I think that’s some folks’ rationale on Syria.

It is my firm belief the Guardian are closet racists of the chin stroking Liberal/Champagne socialist types.
This is something I have argued for the past 20 years on OTF and I'm glad some here are finally coming round to it.

Some probably are of course but I would like to think that most aren't (however, their thinking might be laced with plenty of preconceptions and prejudice, that's more likely). I happen to have met and know a few actually (journalists), nice people, not racist but pretty disconnected from reality. And that in itself poses its own challenges.

I don't disagree entirely with what you have said. But the editorial bent and star contributors tend to have a pretty right-wing bent. Whether it's the likes of Widdicombe and Cameron who wrote for the newspaper for years, the gentrification colonisers or the middle-class people who write those agonising articles about how they are sending Toby and Molly to a private school so as not to mix with refugees. Or those who write those patronising articles blaming the whole of black society in the UK because a relative handful of young black boys shoot at each other.

The night of the 2016 election:

She absolutely needs to go the fuck away and never be heard from again, but I think there's more of a chance of her running in 2020 than not.

To be fair to the Guardian they publish articles such as this one:

                          https://www.theguardian.com/commenti...pe-immigration

Well that's not the answer either seemingly. In Denmark they generally seem to have most things sorted out very well. They're still putting Muslim refugees into "Ghettos" and wondering why everyone is getting so upset about that name. There seems to be a fear in eastern europe that they are going to be overwhelmed by muslims, and undermined by jews, even though they have homeopathic amounts of either. It kind of just seems as though there's a solid population of hateful dickheads and morons in every country, and they seem to be coming out in force in varying degrees in varying countries.

That's because a majority of the population either agrees with or sympathises with these people.

Presumably this is part of her strategy to get into the 2020 race, as it can be heard as an anti-Mexican dogwhistle in the US. But making herself Trump-lite surely won't win many primaries with large non-white electorates.

Moreover "curbing immigration" in this context would mean dismantling the asylum principle that has existed since the 1940s. That is a huge step rightward, unthinkable even when Blair was PM.

When TonTon alluded to Clinton's racism on FB, I assumed it was because of this.

She didn't mean it literally but the joke is still very patronizing, like she was saying that she needs to defend Holder and Booker from racists by parodying what they would say.

Oh, I know that didn't mean it literally but it was an awful reaction. If the interviewer genuinely got confused because the two people are black, it does no good to highlight this especially with such a loaded phrase. Let it stay as a mistake. If the interviewer got two people with genuinely similar names - as I do with David Tennant and David Morrisey, for instance - then definitely don't bring attention to the fact they are black. If you are black and want to fuck around with the "they all..." trope then fine.
