    Can trade be reconciled with human rights?

    Ursus's CBC tweet about Bolsonaro's election was thoroughly depressing in its candour, but can the pursuit of international trade ever be truly ethical? At the present time, no nation can afford to eschew business with China, but questions of human rights, such as the Uighur detainment camps, Tibet and internal clampdowns on dissent must be raised by any government of conscience. Similar issues are globally pervasive, with Russia, Saudi Arabia, Israel and Turkey the most egregious offenders, so if an absolutist position is impossible on a practical level, what is the minimum level of compromise that ethical companies and governments can defend in such circumstances?
