LAFD politely refuse to say which people in power, and friends of people in power, were responsible for asking about their own houses thus distracting the LAFD from actually doing the proper job of fighting the large Woolsey Fire from last year.

      Beat me to it.

While PG&E are clearly both incompetent and liable, I am a little worried that there's some people who think that all power-line caused fires can be prevented. And that's probably not true in a place like California, with so much vegetation that dries out over the summer months.

Do such people exist in California?

            I've never met any.

It feels to me like that's the way it's being presented in the media. That because the fires are caused by power lines, it's all the fault of PG&E (and SDG&E, etc). I don't imagine real people think that way, but it's definitely coming from the media.

                Long, but very good

Very good and extremely depressing at the same time.

                    Very much so.

California Sunday regularly produces outstanding work, and Mark Arax has established himself as one of the most perceptive writers on contemporary California and how it became what it now is. Each of his last three books is excellent (I haven't read the first).

Everything I’ve read by Mark Arax has been great. West of the West is a wonderful book.

That’s nuts. But I believe it, too. Earlier today I was chatting to my firefighter friend (who used to live in Windsor) who told me there were times that his fire chief said that the only thing that would stop it was the ocean or a change of wind direction.

Our in-laws in Oakland (about 75 miles south of the fire) have no power, and were woken in the dark by very strong winds and the smell of smoke.

The images from Sonoma are terrifying and heartbreaking, especially to those of us who have spent countless happy hours there.

Route 128 is the main road through the Alexander Valley wine region. A number of wineries have burned and more are threatened.

Many moons ago as a journo I was reporting on a bushfire in Perth. Myself and a photographer ended up with fire on both sides of us. I suspect people have no real concept of how loud, hot, quick and frightening those things are, even at the lower end of the scale. Thoughts with everyone affected.

They've done an incredible job stopping it crossing 101.

I was going to post about our fire threat in Sydney today, the bad conditions and fires all over eastern Australia. But bad though it is, it doesn’t seem as bad as California.

So now, late season fires in the Northern Hemisphere overlap with early season fires in the Southern. It’s almost as if there was an outside factor at play.

Or or to put it another way - considering even the Arctic has had bad fires - all year is Fire Season.

Is everything still OK Sits ? I was watching the BBC last night and there was a reporter in Turramurra in a suburban street (I guess they all are there) with all the houses coated in that pink-dyed fire retardant that they've been dropping. I'm not 100% sure where you live, but I;m fairly sure that it's not very far from Turramurra. It certainly got me to contact my brother in the next suburb over who assured me that they are fine and he seems very confident that they will remain so.

Thanks for your concern ad hoc. We’re in East Lindfield which is probably three suburbs from Turramurra, but Mrs. S works in Gordon which is pretty close and a couple of her colleagues live in Turramurra. The weather cooled yesterday evening which enabled the RFS to get things under control around Sydney. But all the way from the Hunter Valley up to southern Queensland it’s pretty awful and some big fires still out of control inland, especially west of Port Macquarie and Coffs Harbour.

Your brother must be pretty close to us.
