I have posted on this a few times in the past.
For those who are really interested in this, and other British atrocities in Colonial Africa that you were not taught at school. I would strongly urge you to go over to Netflix and search for, "https://www.netflix.com/gb/title/81324674" Journey of an African Colony.
I chronicles Nigerian History from the arrival of the Europeans to Independence with more emphasis on the colonial period.
For those who want bite size chunks, this is a good place to go on youtube
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCWv...abIZpUQ/videos (especially episodes 29.30.35)
There were similar incidents in Yorubaland too, involving Fela Kuti's mother which is why her being killed by the authorities was such a big deal.
Many on here are aware of some of the atrocities in the Belgium Congo and not realise the British were partial to turning the Gatling gun on any Nigerian who complained about their lot.
Protesting market women in Owerri or Aba
Protesting Market women in Lagos
Striking Miners in Enugu
And so on and so forth....

The weird thing is that the British shelled Lagos into submission in an attempt to disrupt the slave trade.
(Of course if Britain hadn't basically set up the slave trade in the first place...)
Thanks for the links TG. I know you posted them before and I was going to ask you for them again.

I know that's what the British say but it was basically a land grab because the British fell out with the local Oba (King). They had been ok with the local behaviour as long as the local leaders were on side.
I think they bombarded it in around 1853 and formally annexed it in around 1861.
This episode gives a quick overview https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_kw0_X2qOGM
and the Netflix series going into it in more depth.

I recently saw the British anti-slavery patrol described as a delicate balancing act between smashing down on the institution of slavery in all its forms, except on the portuguese and their african allies, as portugal was the biggest purchaser, user, and ultimately murderer of slaves, and also the UK's oldest and best ally.
That's actually quite a difficult needle to thread, particularly as command of these ships was usually given to religion based abolitionists, as with the best will in the world, it was a terrible postingLast edited by The Awesome Berbaslug!!!; 22-07-2021, 18:23.

The Bar Standards Board joins the 20th Century. Don't be rude to stroppy teenagers of colour, but we still don't think it's offensive.A barrister at the centre of a storm of outrage over tweets he published earlier this year has been fined and warned over one of them.
