I wouldn't say I'm the world's greatest aesthete (I'm not likely to take laudanum because a couple of brushstrokes have gone awry) but sometimes there's something in a painting that ruins the whole thing for me. Here are a couple of examples:

David Bomberg, The Mudbath:
On the Sutherland, what on earth is that ugly white bit about half way up to the left? Apart from that I can just about see it as what the title says it is. I know it's semi-abstract, but I can't make literal or poetic sense of that. And it mucks up the colour.
As for the Bomberg, you've got the bath, the space around it and people. But what's that black/brown post thing and why is it in the water?
Please help me. It's like having one of those little pimply things on the underside of my eyelid, when it should be pure pleasure.
