      So how do the EU stop us all paying for this shitshow?
      What makes you think they want to stop?

              Robert Alfoldi used to be one of the judges on one of those talent show things (almost certainly whatever they used to call Hungary's Got Talent, or the XFactor - which they did call the X Factor), he always seemed a cut above. I encountered people among the uber conservative people who live where I do who didn't like him at all "Because he's gay". Cunts. The number of people I've had to do the real life version of "defriending" round here is shortly to leave my own wife and children as the only people I talk to.

                (with apologies)

                Does Viktor still find time to watch 6 games per day when he's not being a racist wanker?

                  And sorry to hear that, Ad H. Are there no allies in Csíkszereda?

                    Interesting piece on how FIDESZ (mis)used European funds to help their reelection campaign. http://hungarianspectrum.org/2018/04...ory-of-fidesz/

                      Few. A reasonable number of young people are alright, but most people over the age of 40 are racist, homophobic, Orban-loving wankers.

                        I know that's what you meant. The parties of the EPP (not to mention those for whom it isn't right wing enough) that dominate EU decision making do not want to make things difficult for their friends and allies in Fidesz, so there won't be any strenuous efforts to 'stop us paying'.

                          Just a little cheer from another part of central Europe, elections for Geneva canton parliament have taken place last sunday and the left/progressive block has now the highest number of mps (by 1 but hey...), even the Socialist increased their share (Greens did very well) whilst the rw populist parties have seen their share cut in two...

                          There is hope...

                            Thanks.

                            Could be an interesting couple of years if the EU funds have been nearly all spent with 2 years and 9 months to go till the next lot arrive.

                              Andrew Neil, the BBC's principal political interviewer who makes much of calling Jewdas "Nutters" and talking about how antisemitic Labour is.

                              Given Neil's magazine publishes an antisemitic supporter of Golden Dawn every week and he commissioned Holocaust Denier DAviD irving whilst editing the Sunday Times, his only interest in antisemitism is as a weapon he can use to beat the Labour Party.

                                    Interesting comment by Verhofstadt,but hard to see how the EU can intervene in national politics:

                                      It shouldn't intervene in national politics. But it can and should highlight gross violations of democratic process as go on in Hungary. And parties like FIDESZ which perform these gross violations should be ostracised from the groupings in the European parliament. The EPP really need to kick them out or be tarred by association. Merkel and Orban have very little in common, but she is being made to look an appeaser of fascism.

                                        Also Verhofstadt (not an EPPer of course) seems to have missed Spain off his list.

                                            He was a blatant cheerleader for C's (ALDE) during the recent Catalan election, despite Puigdemont's party also being members of the same grouping.

                                                    Here's the legal text of the Commission proposal. There's a strong focus on the independence of the judiciary, which makes sense in the context of the countries that are currently the reason for this happening, but I wonder if it might be a bit narrow for the long run. There's nothing on press freedom for instance, or for that matter racist demagoguery and suppression of political opponents.

                                                    The following may, in particular, be considered generalised deficiencies as regards the rule of law,
                                                    (a) endangering the independence of judiciary;
                                                    (b) failing to prevent, correct and sanction arbitrary or unlawful decisions by public authorities, including by law enforcement authorities, withholding financial and human resources affecting their proper functioning or failing to ensure the absence of conflicts of interests;
                                                    (c) limiting the availability and effectiveness of legal remedies, including through restrictive procedural rules, lack of implementation of judgments, or limiting the effective investigation, prosecution or sanctioning of breaches of law.
