eBook Gift Question

You can load third-party eBooks onto a Kindle, but only if they're a compatible format: usually .mobi (Amazon's proprietary format is .azw).
Assuming you or your friend can download the .mobi file, you'd have to use a USB cable to transfer it onto a Kindle.
The other option is to buy a non DRMed format and try to convert it to Kindle format, but that's a whole other can of worms.

Amazon does a pretty good job of controlling the Kindle ecosystem, so you might have to use them unless you are sure that there is a Kindle formatted (.mobi) version available elsewhere.
Within the Amazon universe, you should be able to gift an eBook through a link.
Outside the Amazon universe, the two Italian eBook vendors that I have used have gone over to Kobo, which is owned by Rakuten and has the advantage of an English language interface.
If you end up with a non-mobi version, this article on converting other formats should be of use.
